Thrust on care of TB-infected HIV patients Stress on coordinated effort to fight TB Volunteers needed for anti-TB campaign
The role of media assumes greater significance when it comes to Tuberculosis and its control. Knowledge is empowerment and should lead to a demand from TB patients for the best care both from the public and private systems. People must know about the disease, the best diagnostic and treatment options, Myths about TB should be dispelled and misconceptions should be cleared up.
While warning them about how TB spreads and the facts related to the morbidity and mortality associated with it we have to take care not to alarm, or give room to creating further stigma and fear towards patients with TB. Patients are at the receiving end of innumerable messages on health through the media.
The media shapes the knowledge and attitudes to health and disease in the minds of the general public and has a significant social responsibility to ensure authentic, timely and appropriate health news to the public. With healthcare professionals striving to work against the negative impact or sometimes even the lack of impact the media could have, it becomes important for program managers to include the media as a key target for sensitization and indeed recruit the media as “partners” to fight TB.
